ATHE 2017 PLENARY CALL FOR PAPERS: SPECTACULAR SCHOLARSHIP

As we prepare to gather in Las Vegas, the 2017 Conference Committee wishes to foreground the outstanding scholarship created by our members, with scholarship intentionally broadly defined to encompass traditional academic research, artistic practice, pedagogy, and all of the hybrids in between. The Conference Committee is trying a new idea for a plenary session this year, presenting a new opportunity for members to submit to the conference.
In response to growing requests from members for ways to participate in the conference without submitting a full panel, this “Spectacular Scholarship” plenary invites ALL members to submit their work for consideration by the conference committee. You need not be affiliated with a focus group or part of a larger proposal. We simply wish to see your individual scholarship.
This “Spectacular Scholarship” plenary session will actually take the form of four concurrent plenary sessions, each focusing on a different branch of spectacular scholarship. As we celebrate the breadth of scholarly interest within our membership, we also aim to celebrate the breadth of experience within our membership. We aim for each of the four plenary panels to feature the scholarship of ATHE members from different stages of their careers—senior scholars, mid-career scholars, early scholars, and graduate students. (Please note: Graduate students interested in submitting to this plenary call should have previously presented at a major conference; those without this experience are strongly encouraged to submit to the focus group debut panels.)
We have prepared a list of four broad topics that intersect with the conference and general ATHE themes of Spectacle, Theatre, and Higher Education. The full ATHE 2017 theme description may be found at CALL FOR PROPOSALS. We invite scholars of all levels to submit abstracts related to one of the four panel topics listed below:
We invite ATHE members to define and interpret “spectacular” in their own personal ways; we believe each of these topics is broad enough to invite personal definition.
Those wishing to be considered for this plenary should submit their information and abstracts (250 through the ATHE website by Friday, March 17)
We hope to send responses by April 5. Plenary panelists may not use papers already accepted to the conference through the focus group process, but ATHE members already presenting are encouraged to submit separate work to the plenary. ATHE does restrict members to a maximum of two presentations of research at one conference, but members appearing in more service-oriented positions (panel chair, debut panel respondent, etc.) will not have those roles counted in their limit of two.
